Hi Gretchen. How exciting for you! I think Europe is fantastic for solo travelers. The cities are for the most part very safe. The biggest concern is pick pocketing which you should be aware of and take precautions. I think London or Edinburgh could be a great place to start because English is spoken and there is so much to do. Especially in London. As for what to do, that is entirely up to your interests. I always love a guided food tour as an introduction to a city. I love Culinary Backstreets although they only operate in certain cities. I think signing up for any guided day tours is a great way to get comfortable in a new country. Check out Take Walks as well.
